Nothing better than seeing a lightsaber battle
Star Wars is a franchise that even makes grown adults reminisce about. In tribute to the latest movie Star Wars: The Force Awakens arriving after a decade since the previous film, here are my personal favourite Star Wars lightsaber battles in the franchise.
5) Yoda vs Chancellor Palpatine
‘Faith in your new apprentice, misplaced must be’ – Yoda.
I would’ve chose Count Dooku vs Anakin and Obi-wan II but this was so iconic that I had to include it. The Sith Lord vs the Jedi Master. They only duelled once throughout the entire franchise which makes it even more iconic. The best part of the entire scene was the elevation and the so shaped pod fight in the supreme court. The strength of both individuals was clearly even as Palpatine used his Force Lightning against Yoda’s Force which resulted in a blast that send both characters flying. The ‘pod war’ as I would like to call it saw Palpatine bombarding Yoda but then Yoda evening the score. The fight was brilliant in terms of balance as all aspects were drawn in.
The lightsaber battle however, was a bit short and I would have liked to see a longer battle, but for obvious reasons with film length, it was not to be. Nevertheless, the duel was by far one of the iconic battles of the franchise.
4) Luke Skywalker vs Darth Vader II
‘I know there’s good in you’ – Luke Skywalker.
After learning to control his fear and enhancing his skills, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) aimed to bring back his father to the Jedi ways. After realising that his friends were spurn into a trap and that Darth Sidious (AKA Chancellor Palpatine), tried to lure (as well as Darth Vader) Luke into the dark side, this set up the final lightsaber bout of the original trilogy. The battle was well orchestrated as the lightsaber skills of both improved from their first duel. The battle itself was a test of strength, however resulted in Luke Skywalker using his anger to get the upper hand on Darth Vader which resulted in Vader’s hand being chopped off (Well, limb damage is an epitome of Star Wars movie… not so sure why).
After realising what he has done, Luke refuses to join the dark side thus provoking Sidious to use his trustworthy Lightning Force on Luke. Darth Vader looked on initially in obedience… then concern…. then disbelief which resulted in the iconic ‘NOOOOOOO’ which led to him lifting Sidious up with both hands (well one and his handless arm) and thrusting him down into a long hole to his death.
Yet another iconic scene but regarding the lightsaber battle, it was well done especially with Luke showcasing his inner feelings as well as Vader delivering.
3) Luke Skywalker vs Darth Vader I
‘I AM YOUR FATHER’ – Darth Vader
‘NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!’ – Luke Skywalker
Another iconic, if not the most iconic scene in the entire movie series (also why I preferred this bout rather than the second meeting). Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader met whereby Vader came out on top over a novice Jedi padawan. The bout was fun to watch whilst seeing Luke using his tricks to Darth Vader’s surprise. However, Darth Vaders’ supremacy saw him outmatch h
is son which resulted in Luke’s arm being struck clean off from Vader after Luke managed to slightly graze his father. This led to the iconic moment whereby Vader told Luke that he is his father leading to the most iconic lines in film history.
2) Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Darth Maul
The prequels indefinitely had much better collaborated fights compared to the original trilogy. Qui-Gon (Liam Neeson) and Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul certainly was certainly up there in the best fights. Not only that, after teasing a one sided lightsaber, Darth Maul summoned his double-sided lightsaber to much surprise and excitement. The bout itself was impeccable, with Darth Maul (Ray Park) standing out the most with his athleticism and lightsaber skills. The second half of the fight (Obi-Wan vs Maul) was action packed and fast paced which is why I enjoyed it so much. However, i do wish the ending of the bout ended a bit differently which would’ve meant Darth Maul being carried on into further movies. Nevertheless, the fight itself was a joy to watch.
1) Anakin Skywalker vs Obi-Wan Kenobi
‘I will do what I must…’ – Obi-Wan
‘You will try…’ – Anakin
An absolute joy to watch. This bout was my favourite just because Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan) and Hayden Christensen (Anakin) are such good sword handlers. The beginning and middle parts of the duel were so action packed that involved some physical fighting as well was so well executed. Obi-Wan and Anakin were showing their true powers albeit Anakin was a bit reckless (due to his age of course and being just a student). The fight was pinnacle to the prequels as two great sword-handlers finally went toe-to-toe.
However, things did slow down after they both inadvertently destroyed the defence systems which led to the bout being slowed down as Anakin and Obi-Wan were playing cat and mouse trying to avoid the catastrophes of letting down the defence systems. But it was definitely my favourite fight of the series and was a joy to watch as well as being a bit emotional seeing both beloved characters inevitably facing off.
